Dr. Alison Mocko now offers vasectomy as option for sterilization of intact male dogs.
Please reach us at info@bowiespay.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
A vasectomy is an alternative procedure for sterilization of dogs. Like a vasectomy for humans, it involves removing a piece of the spermatic cord that carries sperm from the testicle. Unlike in humans, this procedure is done under general anesthesia and is NOT reversible.
Dr. Mocko will only do a vasectomy on dogs that are NOT cryptorchid. This means that both testicles have descended into the scrotal sack.
Aftercare and recovery is mostly the same. You need to keep your pet calm/confined, prevent him from licking, and monitor for infection. Like in humans, there are reports of long-lasting discomfort from testicle degeneration or sperm granuloma formation.
Male secondary sex characteristics and behaviors, as well as testosterone-dependent diseases, are not prevented, since testosterone is still produced.
This is something you should discuss with your full-service veterinarian. Dr. Mocko does not do veterinary consultations. She only does surgical procedures.
The price ranges from $440- $760. Please call for a quote.
