Female Dog Ovary-Sparing Spay (Hysterectomy)

An ovary-sparing spay (hysterectomy) is an alternative procedure for sterilization of dogs.  Like a hysterectomy for humans, it involves removing only the uterus and cervix, and leaving the ovaries in place.   

Any female dog can get a hysterectomy.

Aftercare and recovery is mostly the same.  You need to keep your pet calm/confined, prevent her from licking, and monitor for infection.   The incision will be bigger to facilitate removal of the entire uterus (no "stump").  

Female secondary sex characteristics and behaviors, as well as  estrogen-dependent diseases, are not prevented, since estrogen is still produced.  Estrus (heat) cycle behavior and small amounts of bleeding from vaginal membranes  can still occur. Will stand to mate, thus at risk of sexually-transmitted diseases, or trauma from males. False pregnancy and  lactation are also possible.

The cost ranges from $480- $840. We do require an IV catheter and IV fluids during the procedure at the cost of $75.  Also, clients have the option to confirm removal of uterine tissue with histopathology for $200.  Please call for a quote.
